Demography and Smallpox

I believe someone mentioned demographics and smallpox in our topic brainstorm a few days ago, so I thought I'd post a recent piece in The Economist dealing with the Africa's demographic 'climate'. Nothing smallpox-specific here, but rather just a really good overview/treatment of some of the main demographic questions related to disease as well as urbanization, agriculture, and more. Figuring out how smallpox altered demographic landscapes before and after eradication could be a great topic, and hopefully this will help get those gears turning!

If any of you are interested more in questions related to impact of disease on demography, etc, I can recommend a number of other excellent reads, leads, as well as Stanford courses to try out!
